Licensing options
NEXTWELL offers two licensing options for the licensing of Clipen-based software (Archiver). The Clipen license is always a locked license that is locked to tracked website(s) using domain(s) or IP address(es).
Each license also limits the number of CPUs (or processor cores) that are utilized by the Clipen engine for data processing within the Clipen operating architecture. Clipen operates in a normal way on a platform with more CPUs than are limited by the license, but the hardware potential is not fully utilized in such cases.
NOTE: Each processor core of a dual-core (multi-core) processor is counted as one CPU!
NOTE: When planning for Clipen deployment, consider that the only CPUs (or processor cores) that should be included within a license are those whose machine(s) will run any part of the Clipen engine (except RDBMS operated on a stand-alone machine). If needed, another CPUs may be added into the license at any later date.
The two licensing options correspond with two types of pricing:
- domain-locked license - upfront payment including one-year update (following updates in the form of annual subscription)
- IP-locked license - annual subscription including update
Direct support is provided only for customers with prepaid update or prepaid support. For further details regarding licensing options or their modifications, please contact NEXTWELL via sales@nextwell.com.
NOTE: The Clipen license is in the form of the license file license.dat and is usually distributed to Clipen users via e-mail (the license file is NOT distributed within the installation CD/DVD or installation package).
Domain-Locked License
The domain-locked license allows users to track those websites whose domains are specified within the license. If a website actively uses an alias or aliases, all aliases must be specified in order to track network communication also targeted to the aliases.
It is possible to specify up to 1024 domain names within the domain-locked license. Each domain name must represent a second- or lower-level domain. The domain must be officially registered by the appropriate NIC and must have a valid record within Internet DNS. Domains representing so-called "pseudo-TLDs" (for example: co.uk) are not allowed as second-level domains - a third-level domain must be specified in such cases (for example: yourwebsite.co.uk).
- running the Clipen engine is unlimited
- updating the Clipen engine is time-limited (and is subject to annual subscription)
IP-Locked License
The IP-locked license allows users to track those websites (or website servers) whose IP addresses are specified within the license. Although a website may be tracked by Clipen using a domain name only, the IP-locked license does not restrict the tracked website domain name(s).
It is possible to specify up to 256 ranges of IP addresses (but it is the number of particular IP addresses that is decisive). Clipen currently supports only IPv4 addresses - private IP addresses are not allowed (see RFC1918 for details about private IPs).
- running the Clipen engine is time-limited (and is subject to annual subscription)
- updating the Clipen engine is time-limited (and is subject to annual subscription)
